This is the largest flare in solar cycle 24. The last flare with a similar magnitude (X9.0) occurred on 5 December 2006. It occurred impulsively in AR 12673, producing global waves. The associated halo CME is fast (maybe too fast to be measured in http://spaceweather.gmu.edu/seeds/mkmovie.php?cme=20170906.122407.w155.v0582.p243&frame=7&r).

AR12674 is classified as a bipolar beta sunspot group (red negative, green positive photospheric magnetic polarities). Note the moving magnetic features/moat flow around the leading negative sunspot (positive polarity) which seem associated with jet-like activity in the corona.

Delta spot AR12673 in the South hemisphere is the source of two consecutive CME eruptions (http://spaceweather.gmu.edu/seeds/mkmovie_ql.php?cme=20170904.183608.w157.v0334.p241&frame=13). Given that the second CME is a halo CME it is expected that this event would be geoeffective.

FLux emergence was observed from a small region in the southern hemisphere. A small-scale active region was formed and magnetic connection started to develop between the two near-by active regions.

Beautiful coronal rains. A small flare was also seen at the end of this movie, and it excited oscillations of the coronal rains.
