Science Goal: Solar Wind Source Regions During Solar Minimum Conditions
Program: Fast deep mode, 2048 slit position
Target: Coronal Hole
xcen=-106 ycen=-812
Instrument: SOTSP
HOP/JOP: 146
Description: Request to SOT HOP Number 0146 SOT/NFI NaID, Stokes IV: full FOV, low cadence (~5min) but high sensitvity (long exposure times!) Reminder: program using Na D V/I is OK for on disc pointing only. Use Na D IV for if limb is visible in the field of view. SOT/SP: Stokes IQUV repeated large SP maps also with long exposure times. Other Instruments: Scientific Objectives: 1) Objectives: Characterize solar wind source regions during solar minimum conditions, and relate to properties in the solar wind measured at 1 AU to investigate the formation of the solar wind 2) Scientific background: During solar minimum conditions, the solar wind measured in-situ at 1 AU mostly originates from the two polar coronal holes, especially, the polar coronal hole boundary for the slow solar wind. The Ulysses solar wind ion composition data from the last solar minimum indicates that the coronal temperature in the fast wind is different between the solar wind originating from the south and north CH. There are also variations with time and possibly latitude in both the fast and slow wind. This HOP proposes to monitor the corresponding solar wind source regions for several solar rotations at the two polar CH boundaries that can be directly related to the solar wind data measured at 1 AU to understand the cause of variations and the solar wind formation.
